Welcome, UC Berkeley class of 2021!

Are you looking for a way to make a deeper connection with your new classmates—and classes—at Berkeley? If you’re requesting to live in Unit Hall 2, and are interested in enrolling in one of the courses below, the new Impression Courses might be right for you.

How does the program work?

  • You and a cohort of peers living on the same floor in the residence halls will take one course together. We will also place you in a dedicated discussion section together.
  • To apply just indicate your interest on your housing application. We will contact you after the housing application deadline with further information.

What are the benefits?

  1. A community of other students with whom to discuss course content. Talking about courses outside of class is one sure sign of engagement, and engaged students gain more from their educations and do better in their classes.
  2. Twenty-four study buddies right there where you live!
  3. A guaranteed seat in a high-demand, popular course. We will save you a seat in one of the classes listed below—your choice! These courses often fill up before new first-year students even have a chance to enroll.
  4. Receive a housing offer for the Impressions Courses Residential Community.  If you and a friend are both selected for the Impressions Courses (and indicate on your housing application that you want to be roommates) we will try our best to place you in the same room!
  5. Satisfy one of your breadth requirements in a course that was designed to be mind expanding for students of all intended majors. This fall’s Impression Courses:
    • Hollywood: The Place, the Industry, the Fantasy (satisfies Historical Studies breadth) taught by Distinguished Teaching Award winner Kathleen Moran
    • Introduction to Astronomy(satisifes Physical Science breadth) taught by Distinguished Teaching Award winner Alex Filippenko
